Silvery Tweed Cereals chills out after completion of £250k plant upgrade

Silvery Tweed Cereals’ manufacturing team are feeling cool as cucumbers after the completion of a substantial upgrade to the cooling equipment on one of the business’s most popular lines.

The Berwick-Upon-Tweed based cereal manufacturer and processor has just completed a £250k project to upgrade the cooling capabilities of the plant’s flaking line, delivering improved efficiency, flexibility and hygiene as well as a reduction in pre-pack product temperatures of almost half.

In keeping with the business’s reputation for technological innovation and progressive process development, Silvery Tweed plant staff were keen to move away from the industry standard of drying, cooling conveyors which use individual slats on a chain drive. The benefits of upgrading the existing cooling system included reducing pre-pack temperatures, diminishing floor waste, simplifying the cleaning process, and significantly lessening the danger of long-term breakdown.

The bespoke cooler belt was designed in conjunction with local engineering company FEG. The finished upgrade is the culmination of a year’s work in finding the right partner to take on the instruction, then deliver the concept from the design stage through to its installation; FEG rose to the challenge and have delivered on all expectations of the brief.

At the same time, Silvery Tweed also took the opportunity to upgrade the process control of the flaking line. This enhancement allows the line operators massive flexibility in managing line speeds and product depths, as well as dust extraction and refrigeration airflow.

Bob Gladstone, MD of Silvery Tweed Cereals, welcomed the completion of the plant works and praised the levels of efficiency the upgrades are already delivering: “the Silvery Tweed team is always investigating new ways to run our manufacturing sites more efficiently, and we are pleased to report that our alterations to the cooling line in our flaking plant are already creating improvements which will positively affect the service we provide for our customers.

“In addition, our changes to process control are already creating a substantial reduction in floor waste, which in turn helps increase output and reduces the cleaning load for our staff.

“With these upgrades newly completed and more already on the horizon, we aim to continue providing our customers with premium-quality cereal products made to their exact specifications.”
