More than 1500 children from Northumberland and North Tyneside spent a day learning about their food’s journey between field and fork at the Glendale Children’s Countryside Day last week, with financial support provided once again by Silvery Tweed Cereals.

Organised by the Glendale Agricultural Society and now in its 13th year, the Children’s Countryside Day sees primary school children from across the North-East visiting the Glendale Showground to learn about where their food comes from, experience rural life, and gain some insight into the importance of farming and the countryside. With an extensive exhibitor list ranging from beekeepers to wool spinners, hygiene advocates to farming and countryside educators, the Day is many children’s first introduction to farming and country life, and a yearly highlight of local schools’ event calendars.

As well as supporting the event financially, Silvery Tweed Cereals ran an interactive stand on the day, giving children the chance to create their own blend of cereals and learn about different kinds of grain.

Bob Gladstone, Silvery Tweed Cereals’ MD, said: “This is an inspirational event which we are proud to pledge our support to. Education of the next generation is key to the continued success of the UK’s agricultural industry, and as a company we have always placed great emphasis on this, especially when it is within our local community.”

“As a family business based in Berwick for over 150 years, we feel strong ties with the area’s heritage and a great connection with our local community. Most of our grain is sourced from within 40 miles of where we live and work, and we’re very happy to be part of an event which shares our ‘field to fork’ ethos.”

Philippa Shell, Organiser of the Glendale Agricultural Society’s Children’s Countryside Day confirms: “We are so grateful for the continued assistance we receive each year from Silvery Tweed Cereals.

“It is thanks to our sponsors and the many volunteers who give up their time, that allows us to carry on educating children in a fun and interactive way.The aid or financial backing of sponsors or volunteers has helped this flagship event to grow and evolve and to continue to offer a countryside classroom to schools.”
