Silvery Tweed helps food lovers celebrate Berwick’s rich heritage and provenance

Silvery Tweed Cereals has helped the organisers of the annual Berwick Food & Beer Festival serve up a treat once again for thousands of food and drink lovers from across the north east and Scottish Borders.

As one of the town’s longest established and largest food businesses, Silvery Tweed Cereals is at the heart of a thriving regional industry which is being increasingly recognised by processers who are keen to source high quality products, along with consumers nationally and international.

Opened by the Mayor of Berwick upon Tweed, Hazel Bettison, the celebration of local food and drink included a look back through the region’s food history as part of the Berwick 900 celebrations. The theme was particularly fitting as the event is organised by the town’s Slow Food group, part of a worldwide movement to record and preserve regional food heritage – in Berwick’s case this includes brewing, fishing and farming.

Based in the town and family owned and managed since its foundation in 1843, Silvery Tweed Cereals is a processor of cereals and ingredients for breakfast cereal manufacturers, plus bakeries and the wider food and drink industry across the UK. The company has always played an active role in the local community and is proud to support the Berwick Food & Beer Festival according to MD Bob Gladstone:

“The Berwick Food & Beer Festival is always fantastic and it goes from strength to strength as the fine local food and drink producers increasingly get the recognition they deserve. We are proud to play an active part in the event and we’d like to thank all the people who visited our stand to learn more about the cereals and seeds than go into many of their foods.

“We work nationally with some of the country’s top food brands but what many local people may not know is that we source the vast majority of our grains from farms and merchants within a 40 mile radius of Berwick. That’s vital in maintaining a transparent supply chain and supporting local suppliers, jobs and families.”
